I was in my local Jessops store yesterday, ear-wigging as an assistant explained to a potential customer the virtues of the 50mm prime lens. Alas she then went on to explain how you wouldn't want to use a zoom lens, especially a wide one up to 200mm for portraits. Nope. It has to be a 50 or 60mm prime. Oh dear, I thought. More complete bo**ocks. My all time favourite lens for portraits is a Nikkor 80-200mm but what do I know? It came to be my turn and I asked if Jessops had such a thing as a short PC-sync cable with male sync plugs on each end to join an off-camera flashgun to the camera. She steered me to a display area and offered me a USB cable. "," I said and explained again but more slowly with expressive hand gestures. She consulted another member of staff who was ringing something up on the till. He said, "I can't think of two things at once." Which is fair enough. I said," forget it."

The PC-sync cable was needed because the one I ordered from China was the same (wrong) cable I already had 2 of with a jack plug on one end. By the time I've finished this battery flash set up I'll have more spare cables, wrong cables, plugs, adapters and goodness knows what than I know what to do with. Don't even get me started on how the so-called 2.5mm jack plug actually appears to have a diameter of 2mm and the 3.5mm plug, a diameter of 2.5mm.

Three shoots coming up (maybe). Love de Carvalho on the 19th Oct, new model Brett on the 25th and Debbie on 9th November (with MUA/Stylist Sam Griffin).

I gave up on Jessops years ago, what I considered a very basic item they had no idea, a cable release.

Had exactly the same experience with my local Jessops when I asked for a PC-Sync cable the young lad tried to send me to the local PC World! It was only when I commented that it was probably a bit specialised for their limited point-and-shoot counter that I suddenly realised that he had no idea what I was talking about. I then had to explain what a PC-Sync cable was. Sad isn't it.

Indeed it is sad and I for one won't be bothering with jessops again. To be honest I don't know what I'd do without ebay. It's amazing the number of cables, plugs and gizmos you can get from China Smile
