Le Chapelier

By Xandru
I came across this hat maker while walking the streets of Caen, France. He was making some beautiful good quality hats, and yet his equipment and tools were some 50 years old! This prompted the idea to give the photo a retro look. Not sure I succeeded, but I will leave you to judge that. I am also uploading the original so you can compare. Any critique, suggestions and comments are most welcome.
This photo was shot with the kind permission of the hat maker himself. Merci Michel.

I've seen this done, it's a fascinating process. The sophistication is in the milliner's skill rather than in machinery.
I like the desaturated look generally, it gives a timeless feel - except that the strong blue of the man's clothing draws attention to the least important part of the frame. Why not try mono with sepia or yellowish toning as an alternative, it would suit the straw?
Thanks Moira for your valued comment. I have just uploaded a mono version.

I like being able to see all three. The lead and V2 are my favourites. But it's nice to see the colour too because there are many things you miss otherwise.

Thanks for the mono version, it's quieter, more studied. It works better for me.

Hi.
Remember Harold Lloyd the silent films actor from the last century? Imagine how wonderful would be to see his work in colour.

Summer, straw, hats, hay are all signified by the golden colour which monochrome turns to grey. Summers in Britain can be grey. Keep them in the colour they should be. Golden 😊

You can crop to square starting from the frame from the hat on the left foreground and ending it behind the milliner's back. But you can leave it as in V1, it's fine!

I love the lead....and, hat making, millinery, is still making hats. The equipment is what it is. This is true of so many crafts...often the tools of the craft go back millennia....pettery, glassblowing, woodworking (we do have now power tools)....etc. Materials are still the same...except when they are not....look at 3D printing.
