I was looking through my non orchid images, 'cos you are probably getting tired of nothing but orchids, and came upon this.
The elephants are taken from a sanctuary every day to the river to bathe. This unfortunate elephant is as a result of a landmine in the ongoing dispute between the sri lankan government and tamil tigers.
She was tolerated by the other elephants, but was definately at the back of the "pecking order" for food and attention.

Very poignant image, made all the more so by your moving narrative - I saw similar injuries to elephants in Cambodia, a very sad sight
