I'd need to have been there to answer that, really, but they tell stories for me, and they hang together. It's down to faces, body language, timing.
V1 for the pursed lips and swinging arms.
V2 for the direct eye contact.
V3 for the contrast between fresh but blank faces and the commanding character on the left.
With an event like this you can plan to some extent, check out angles in advance, find out what the schedule is. But you cannot choreograph the action, you have to make the most of what chance throws your way in the limited time and space available.
Looking back in my portfolio, when I photographed our local Remembrance Day parade I received this classic comment:
Quote: I think the chap on the left should have been facing into the shot ... and it would work better if that girl at the front had been looking straight at the camera.
It took a while for my blood pressure to settle down after that. Yeah, fine, jump up and down during the two minute silence and yell out 'Turn round and look at the camera'.
V3 is my pick here by the way. Because they are the veterans, or the victims, of the future. I like the sense of being in amongst them, and the feeling that they'll carry on marching whatever happens because that's what they do.
Photojournalism is about creating a journal, a record of daily observations and experience. Capturing the day for the future.
thanks for crit
All decent interesting images, all showing interesting faces. Your technique has led to dark patches here and there between figures and I find that distracting. This effect is endemic of your technique and can work quite well in street scenes of a type, but you have overdone it a bit here.
Pretty good, you have captured the feel of the day and the people. Some of the expression on V! in particular are priceless. These faces could only be doing what they are doing.
You have achieved a feeling on being amongst the people especially V3.
The subject suits BW giving a certain air of grimness to the occasion. V3 would work in BW, i expect you have tired it.
Focus and composition is good .
The processing has your style to it which I quite like but some might say a bit heav,
