Colorful Cacti

By Z_Driver
I did this shot out in Cave Creek, AZ in a park. I decided to give flash painting a try using some CD cases as makeshift gels. It was much harder than I thought it would be.

I exposed this shot for ~25min to capture the star trails after the moon went down. I'm looking forward to going back to the same site and attempting to improve the shot as there were a few things I should have changed.

Brilliant shot! This has been overlooked! The star trails are great, I could have done without the red though.

happyostrich, if Z_driver comes back in about 8 years time the nearest star might have reflected some red...but I'm not sure his torch was strong enough!!
Great shot, BTW.

I like it... very imaginative and cleverly set up. I personally don't have any problems with the colours, but the only thing I would suggest - assuming you will be using the same cacti - is to set up slightly further to the right, to that the centre point of the star trail circles is not located behind one of the cacti and that the RH cactus is further over to give a little more balance to the RHS.

Nice shot, the colors add a lot of interest.
I do agree with Paul, I would adjust the angle to center Polaris just above the cactus on the right. You may want to try using colored cellophane on your flashlights to add the different colors.

Thanks for the comments. As for getting the north star in frame I agree that would have been nice. Unfortunately I am no astronomer and honestly the fast that Polaris is somewhere in the frame is a marvel itself for me.

I guess not everyone was feeling the flash painting. It was my first attempt solo at it and it is much more difficult than I though. I also wanted crazy colors. Tripping over a prickly pear cactus was one of the many outtakes not seen here. I'm honestly a bigger fan of light painting and will be doing that from now on. I didn't have a powerful enough torch which is why I opted for the SB800 for this shot.

Once again a great photo has slipped under the radar. Well worth the clicks and hope it gets many many more.

I really like this technique... need to find more on how to accomplish it...
