I Hate The Shard

By ZenTony
So it's out there then. I hate the Shard together will most other buildings built in the City of London over the last 40/50 years to satisfy the egos of foreign owners. The French managed to contain all the new development in Paris within an area at La Defence and thereby retain the integrity of it's Capital. Not here though. London has allowed itself to be raped ! The photo itself is 4 years old now but my view is pretty much the same as it was then.

As prince Charles so eloquently once put it, when commenting on the proposed extension to the National Gallery:
"What is proposed seems to me a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend,"
Here we have an outbreak of carbuncles...the same has happened with the waterside development of Oslo. They are trying to create a Manhattan-like ocean front, but all they have achieved it to block the view of the Oslofjord for many others...

It is tragic really. The London skyline used to be so elegant. It is so crass now and reflects everything wrong with society. Too much money in the wrong hands. If they had just focused on Canary Wharf then that would have been much more acceptable..............but it's screwed now !

Agreed absolutely. I understand that the great distinction of the Shard was in the financing package: it looks awful, and the nearest rival is the concave horror that looks like an early mobile telephone.

I feel the same about these as about sleeping policemen on roads: the perpetrators should be made to remove them by hand, with the aid of a blunt teaspoon.

I have a soft spot for the Lloyds Building, and the Gherkin - to my mind, they are interesting, at least, if not in keeping with their surroundings. Ditto the Post Office Tower, with a very Tomorrow's World feel to it.

An extra thought... There's a remarkable photograph of St Paul's, standing surrounded by smoking rubble. The Shard wouldn't cut it as a symbol of heroic resistance, and more than Chris 'Failing' Grayling would have managed the Dunkirk evacuation competently.
