Unité d'habitation, Marseilles. The Pool on the Roof

By ZenTony
Le Corbusier's Unité d'habitation in Marseilles still stands proudly as a monument to brutalist architecture. Cheap replicas sprang up throughout Europe and particularly in the UK that created so many social problems. Mostly either fallen apart or demolished.

I like both, but the almost monochromatic colour version just a little more. The high key treatment says hot summer days. Great contrast of the architecture and the mountains beyond, it's very like a film set, how will the story unfold?
Just a shame that the corner of the pool is cut off.

I agree about the pool corner James. I had sneaked into what is a private area on the roof and taken a couple of quick snaps. I am irritated by that but I still like it overall. If you are ever in Marseille I would recommend a visit though. It is an extraordinary building and the views are fabulous.

The b&w reflects the era when this iconic architectural icon was built.

If I remember correctly, this was colloquially known as 'La Maison du Fada ' The Madman's House...

The colour version for me - although I reckon that B&W suits the subject, there's something a bit weird about the conversion, so there are edge effects and a lack of contrast. I don't seem able to download the colour version to try a different conversion. Maybe if you also uploaded it as your own modification...
